Equipment

  • Laryngeal mask airway of the appropriate size (#4 in females and #5 in males)
  • 20 - 40 mL syringe
  • Lubricating jelly
  • Tape

Method

  1. Remove all air from the laryngeal cuff
  2. Lubricate the posterior surface of the laryngeal mask
  3. Gently tilt the head backwards and insert with the posterior surface of the laryngeal mask against the hard palate
  4. Continue until resistance is felt
  5. As the cuff is insufflate, the LMA may move out of the mouth a few centimetres
  6. Secure the laryngeal mask airway with tape
