DIagnostic Criteria
- ≥5 of the following symptoms nearly every day during the same 2 week period (at least one symptom is either depressed mood or anhedonia):
- Depressed mood most of the day
- Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all or almost all activities
- Significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain (>5% of body weight in a month) or decrease or increase in appetite
- Insomnia or hypersomnia
- Psychomotor agitation or retardation (observed by others)
- Fatigue or loss of energy
- Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropraite guilt
- Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness
- Recurrent thoughts of death; recurrent suicidal ideation with/without a plan or suicide attempt
- Importantly, the episode is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance or another medical condition
